“Those who fail to bet on the green economy will be living in a grey future...those who embrace green technologies will set the gold standard for economic leadership in the 21st century" - António Guterres, UN Secretary General, 2017
I'm interested in tackling climate change. Why should I talk to my MP about the green economy?
Effective engagement with your MP will require an understanding of the the economic benefits of the growth of the green economy. Your MP will be more willing to support your agenda if you can show that it will bring about clear benefits to the constituency, such as jobs, opportunities for business, cleaner air, alleviation of fuel poverty and more accessible public transport. The UK’s Industrial Strategy (HM Government, 2017) highlights the opportunities for the British low carbon market, estimating that the UK’s clean economy could grow at four times the rate of GDP .
This section will provide insight into some of the areas you can discuss with your MP if they have a particular interest in creating a low-carbon economy alongside economic growth. It covers:
The electric vehicle industry can be incredibly beneficial to the UK economy. Highlighting this can help generate common ground between constituents and MPs with an economic focus.
Retrofitting involves the addition of new features to older housing such as better insulation and double glazing. As well as reducing energy consumption retrofitting can be hugely beneficial to the economy.
The Government’s 2017 Clean Growth Strategy (HM Government, 2017) brought in a number of measures to promote renewables. However, the growth of the renewable sector must go further.
The Government's Clean Growth Strategy, published in 2017, provides a lot of information on recent changes in UK environment and climate change policy.
Like the Clean Growth Strategy, the Industrial Strategyalso provides a lot of information on how the Government is trying to support the green economy.
Bright Blue is centre-right think tank with a particular interest in environment and climate change policy. You can read more about their work on climate change here.
